TENAC Board Meeting (Open to the Public)
DATE: Thursday, October 27, 2016
TIME: 6:30 PM to 9 PM
PLACE: Sumner Museum School
(corner of 17th and M Streets, NW)
TENAC has invited Councilmember Anita Bonds, sponsor of key tenant legislation and other Councilmembers, especially those uncommitted, to urge their support for critically important tenant measures. Office of Tenant Advocate Officials (OTA) have been invited. We have also invited other special guests to speak, including former mayor and great TENAC friend, Vincent Gray, friends and allies Jackie Jeter and David Dzidzieno, President and Political Coordinator of the Metro DC chapter of the AFL-CIO, respectively, and Joyce Robinson-Paul, Statehood-Green Party and staunch tenant supporter.
Your attendance and the Q&A following speaker presentations on these bills is crucial. Councilmember Anita Bonds's bills before The Council are to repeal the outrageous 2% add-on to the annual rent increase formula and repeal the grossly excessive 30% increases allowed on vacant apartments. Also under consideration are other vitally important bills. One would prevent landlords from exacting exorbitant higher rents as "concessions," through side agreements, obscurely based on the rent regulations long abolished - - that if still legal would allow higher increases. Another key measure, long sought after, would grant right-to-counsel to low-income tenants who lack legal counsel, when facing eviction and other housing proceedings.
Rental housing advocates have been fighting for these crucial bills for years. With your strong support we can succeed in passing them. Success means You will no longer have to pay a 30% increase on a new apartment rental, and you will no longer have an extra two-percent tacked onto your annual rent increase, which compounded over the years add hundreds of dollars to your rent.
We urge you to attend the TENAC Meeting, Thursday, October 27th from 6:30 PM to 9 PM, where these measures will be discussed and their passage strongly advocated.
